Peter Abbott was born in Queens, New York, and raised on Long Island in a family of six children. He became the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from Hofstra University. He began his career with the New York Police Department, rising through the ranks from patrol officer in Brooklyn to Inspector and Executive Officer in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner. During his service, he completed graduate studies at Columbia University’s Police Management Institute and executive training with the FBI in Quantico. He served as a first responder with the NYPD at Ground Zero on 9/11.
After retiring from the NYPD, Peter was appointed Chief of Police of the Sarasota Police Department in 2002, serving until 2010. Peter now serves as a Certified Financial Planner with Edward Jones. His experience in strategic planning, fiscal oversight, and governance will support All Star Children’s Foundation as it continues advancing innovative, trauma-informed care and long-term solutions for children and families in foster care
Peter serves on several community boards and has long been active in civic leadership across Sarasota. He and his wife Marcy have two grown children, Ashley and Travis.
